The task is to discuss and evaluate the 20 greatest/most popular shmup soundtracks (ost) and discuss what makes a shmup ost good, why the genre is fill with so much great music, how sound and music compliment visual styles, how the songs are composed, the game play purposes of music, chiptunes versus studio recordings, Playstation era 3D vs today's grotesque pixar 3D, and many more topics. Also these selections were voted on by a group of around 600 shmup players, so if you are mad about some of the placements, you have only yourself to blame (I kid). One fun tradition we also included in our discussion was to go over the boss music of each ost and see how each game either defined the tradition of intense and terrifying final boss music (panic inducing, as Iain describes it), or subverts that expectation with a more low key or surreal final boss tune.
