The Marx Toys Disaster: How Glen Dale Made Childhood Dreams, Then Became a Nightmare The building is still there. Drive through Glen Dale, West Virginia today and you'll see it — brick and broken glass, roof collapsed, vines swallowing the walls. Nobody bought it. Nobody tore it down. For forty years it just stood there, rotting. This was the largest toy factory on earth. 2,500 workers. Three shifts a day. Hundreds of millions of toys — Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, army men, cap guns — made right here, in a town of 1,500 people in the West Virginia hills. Then, in 1980, it was gone. Not slowly. Not gradually. Gone. And nobody saw it coming.
