One of Turkey's most popular bands, Yeni Turku, were the Turkish component during three nights of 'Eastern Mediterranean Music' hosted at London's Jazz Cafe during a two weeek Camden Cypriot Festival 1991. In this clip they perform their famous rendition of Teli Teli Teli, with words spoken in both Turkish and Greek - of a song written by Greek songwriter Manos Loizos which has become a symbol of cross-cultural cooperation and friendship between the people of Turkey and the people of Greece. Being performed during a Cypriot Festival in London in 1991 when the Greek and Turkish Cypriots were not able to cross the so-called 'Green Line' dividing the island into two halves - the closing comments by band leader Derya in which he expresses the wish that 'we' should meet again and perform there, on the Green Line in Cyprus, was a particularly poignant moment in the Festival. That follow-up concert at the Green Line in Cyprus has not taken place as the twentieth year since that London concert approaches, and the 'Green Line' continues to be a barrier and a 'border' dividing the two communities of Cyprus, so this video clip has been uploaded to the web now in order to remind all of 'us' that it has been a very long time that Derya's wish remains unfulfilled. All artists appearing in the Festival had agreed that a few of their tracks could be released by the festival organisers. This Yeni Turku concert was the first of three evenings of 'Eastern Mediterranean Music' , the second evening featured the music of Marios Tokas from Cyprus, who had met, and performed together with Cypriot poetess Nese Yasin for the first time during the festival, and the third evening featured Ross Daly and the Vasilis Soukas Band from Greece.
