MERLIN | The Once and Future King

❝None of us can choose our destinies, Merlin. And none of us can escape it.❞ - 10 years since this series ended. Crazy how time flies. I was editing this show while it was airing. Doesn't feel real how long it's been. On December 24, 2012, just 3 days after the world was supposed to end (lol), I was at a sushi bar. All I wanted was to go home so I could watch the finale of my favourite show. I went into the bathroom and hid away from my family to check snazzlefrazz and watch the episode in 2 minute increments. When I got home, I beelined towards the computer when we got home, family obligations fulfilled, and watched the rest of the episode. I've only cried during TV/movies 3 times in my life. That night was one of them. The second time was the next morning (Christmas morning), when I woke up, fully believing I dreamed the ending, only to restart the episode and realize that it was not, in fact, a dream. (The third time was over Clara Oswald's death, who, incidentally, technically, came into my life the day after Merlin ended. Tomorrow, that's 10 years as well.) I'm not entirely sure exactly why this series stuck with me as much as it did. With 10 years of no content, I figured I'd have moved on by now. There are shows from just a year or two ago that I've already forgotten half of. I actually started watching Merlin because of Robin Hood, but I don't remember a single thing about that show. But something about this show will forever have a hold on me. Even back then, I guess I could've predicted this, because I don't think I've ever had a hyperfixation that was stronger than the Merlin phase. At ages 12-14, it was all I thought about. I woke up thinking about it. I went to bed thinking about it. Hiatuses were no barrier. It was for 3 years straight. I talked about it constantly. If I was worried about the world ending, it was only because it would've meant that I wouldn't get to see the finale. My parents, when grounding me, elected to ground me from watching Merlin fanvideos instead of taking away my phone. Oh, what an era that was. (I promise, I'm in a healthier state of mind now.) Most of my videos from that time are private now, due to how terrible they were. But every now and then, I find myself re-watching them, and marveling at how far I've come. I was such a different person back then. I had 10 subscribers, Windows Movie Maker, and a dream. I wonder what I would've thought of me now, 10+ years later. Successfully and adult with a career that I never thought I'd accomplish, but still making Merlin fanvideos. I was jumping between a few videos. In the end, I finished this one, because I wanted to encapsulate the theme of the show for the anniversary. I have another video that's more meaningful to me, personally, but probably not to anyone else. I may post it one day, but I'm not sure if the meaning will ever quite resonate with anyone else.
