On Thursday, January 8, the situation escalated as demonstrators set fire to government buildings and public buses. Large crowds were seen chanting slogans such as “Death to the dictator,” directly targeting Iran’s 86-year-old Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The protests appear to go beyond anger against the government and reflect growing demands for political change. Protesters have also raised slogans in support of the return of Reza Pahlavi, the 65-year-old son of Iran’s last Shah, who is currently living in exile in the United States. Reza Pahlavi, considered a prominent face of the movement, had recently called on his supporters to take to the streets against the regime.
