The first thing that you have to pay attention to is that studying a PhD in Italy and the application process is very different from other European countries and also very different from a PhD program in the USA or Canada. If you want to get into a PhD in the USA or Canada, you first have to find the professor you want to work with (your future supervisor) from each university website and then email them accordingly. This can be very tedious since they receive thousands of emails every day. The first step to applying is to remember that the "call" for application for each university is different; some of them open as early as February, while others open in Summer.
