The Battle of Monte Cassino (also known as the Battle for Rome) was one of the bloodiest and most controversial campaigns of World War II. For four long months in 1944, Allied forces launched four brutal assaults against the heavily fortified Gustav Line in Italy, with the ancient Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino sitting atop the strategic mountain as its centerpiece. On February 15, 1944, over 250 Allied bombers dropped hundreds of tons of explosives on the historic abbey — mistakenly believing German troops were using it as a fortress. The once-magnificent 1,400-year-old monastery was reduced to rubble. Ironically, the Germans then moved into the ruins, turning them into an even stronger defensive position. What followed were months of savage fighting in freezing cold, mud, and ruins. American, British, Indian, New Zealand, French, and especially Polish troops suffered horrific casualties as they repeatedly tried to capture the mountain. Over 55,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded, with German losses around 20,000. On May 18, 1944, Polish soldiers finally raised their flag over the shattered ruins of Monte Cassino. The Gustav Line collapsed, opening the road to Rome — but at a staggering human cost. In this video, we detail the key phases of the battle, the controversial decision to bomb the abbey, the heroism and tragedy on both sides, and why Monte Cassino is often called a Pyrrhic victory.
