His father, Bitam, was a Howletts-born silverback, sired in the wild, and a leading figure in the European breeding programme. Bitam fathered many prominent offspring at Howletts, including Biju, Tamba, Ambam and Oumbi — making Biju and Oumbi half-brothers (same father, different mothers). Biju went on to Japan, where he sired Momotaro. This makes Oumbi the half-uncle of Momotaro. Momotaro later sired Gentaro, making Gentaro Oumbi’s half-great-nephew. This makes Lope the grandson of Bitam and the great-nephew of Biju. Through this, Lope stands directly in line with both the European Howletts bloodline and the Japanese Kyoto line. Shufai (also known as Mijadala at birth), born in 2016 at Twycross Zoo, is the youngest son of Oumbi and Ozala — and the younger brother of Lope.
