The motivation for this walk came from my son and his mates wanting to do a wild camp on the top of Raven Crag. They had only done Bronze Duke of Edinburgh prior to this so Louise and I decided to do Raven Crag too just to make sure they got there in one piece and had managed to set up their new tent ok. It was an eventful day. Daniel caught the bus from Carlisle to Keswick for the bargain price of £6 with three of his mates. The bus broke down and a they had to wait until the next one left Carlisle which put them back a couple of hours. Louise and I had already driven to the starting point when we found out that it would be a few hours before they would turn up, so we decided to do a different Wainwright whilst we waited. A quick look on the map and High Rigg seemed a good option as it started in the same car park/lay-by. It might not look it in the video but there was a bitterly cold wind and we worried that the lads might be very cold overnight in their tents. However, the wind dropped quite a bit during the day and when it calmed right down it was actually quite bearable. The lads did a great job carrying their 18+ kg ruck sacks to the summit of Raven Crag which, although not very far, is quite steep for large parts of it. They enjoyed their taste of independence organising their adventure and sorting out their own transport. They left no trace and brought home good memories.
