Our Progress from Tsubakinoumi to Higata Hachimangoku ~The 350-year journey in search of a fruitful land~ The year 2023 marks the 350th anniversary of the completion of canal construction in the first year of Enpo (1673) for the Tsubakinoumi reclamation project. The vast arable land, commonly known as “Higata hachimangoku”,is known as the site of large-scale new rice field development in the early modern period, and today supports people's lives as a rich agricultural production area. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Chiba Prefecture, Asahi City held a special exhibition at the Ohara Yugaku Museum titled “The 350th Anniversary of the Tsubakinoumi Reclamation: The Story of the Higatahachimangoku'' and created a video to go along with it. We will look back at the history of Tsubakinoumi, from its origins to the beginning of land reclamation, the struggle with water, and the journey to becoming a major agricultural production area that brings a good harvest. [For teachers who use this video as a learning resorce] “Tsubakishinden”, known as "Hachimankoku" is a reclaimed land created by draining water from “Tsubaki Umi” into the sea. In this video, Tsubakiumi is called a ‘lake’, but geologically it is a ‘lagoon’ formed when a shallow sea retreated and was held back by a sandbar. As can be seen from its origins, it is thought to have been a vast swamp rather than a lake. Based on the elevation, the water was only about 5 meters deep at the deepest point. This made reclamation possible. When explaining to children, be sure to mention these topographical factors along with the historical background. ------------------------------------------------------ Ohara Yugaku Museum https://www.city.asahi.chiba.jp/yugaku/ TEL:0479-68-4933(9:00~16:30) closing day: Mondays(Excluding holidays. On those days, the Museum will be open on Mondays and closed the following day) ------------------------------------------------------
