In this Climbing VLOG episode we zoom in on my friends' redpoint attempt on the sport climbing 7a route, Highlight, at Marienauer Klippen near Ith in Northern Germany. Watch the video to see how it goes! The 7a sport climbing route, Highlight, has two exciting and enduring overhangs with the crux being at the first overhang. This is a classic Ith sport climbing route, where you will climbing overhangs, pockets, crimps and pinches. The bolting in Ith is pretty sparse, which is also the case for Highlight. Being a 7a sport climbing route, though, the local route setters does recognize the difficulty of the route - especially in the crux sections. There are maybe two meters between each bolts, which is pretty good compared to the rest of Ith. The area is notoriously known for sparse bolting. I actually talked with a local who once said that the bolting paradigm in the Ith area is that the harder sequences of each route is bolted, while it is expected that you bring your own protection for the rest - whether that is true one can only guess. I usually bring some nuts and a set a cams, when climbing in Ith. We visited Ith in Northern Germany near Hannover to do some sport climbing and found this amazing rock climbing crag called Marienauer. It has several sectors with different types of climbs in different grades. There are routes of up to about 20 meters between grade 5a and 7a. This is a really nice climbing project for everyone who like to push through to be sport climbing 7a. The route is pretty spot on for the grade, but is not very sustained. The first four bolts are probably more grade 6b or 6c, but the difficulty definitely increases with the first overhang. You can see some beta in climbing vlog episode on how Anders climbs the route.
