Vic Elford began his rallying career in a Triumph TR4 in 1963, before switching to the Ford Cortina for three seasons with middling success. After falling out with Ford, Elford approached Huschke von Hanstein, Porsche's head of competition, with an offer: Give him a Porsche 911 to rally race in 1967, and see what happens. Elford was turned away. With his own money, Elford purchased a 911 and entered the 1966 rally Corsica as a privateer. Finishining in 3rd place in a bone stock 911 got Porsche's attention. With a crew of Porsche mechanics, Elford nearly won the 1967 Monte Carlo rally but was penalized for changing tires before the final stage and finished 3rd. Porsche was now ecstatic, and hired Elford as their new factory rally driver before the Geneva rally, which Elford won. In total Elford won 3 rallys that season, along with the European Rally Championship. For the start of the 1968 season Elford took revenge at Monte Carlo, winning by over 1 minute ahead of teammate Pauli Toivonen, before flying to Daytona later that week to win the 24 hour race in his first attempt. Elford adapted his skills to sportscar racing effortlessly, finishing 2nd at Sebring, 1st at the Targa Florio and Nürburgring, and was battling for the win at Le Mans when his 908's alternator failed. https://thracing.de/ac-legends-gtc-60... https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/le-...
