Known as the “City of Three Cultures,” Toledo’s cobblestone streets, ancient walls, and blend of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish influences captivated her from the moment she arrived. As her train approached the hilltop city, surrounded by the winding Tagus River, she couldn’t help but think of Don Quijote, imagining the famous knight-errant wandering these very lands. Her first stop was the grand Alcázar of Toledo, a fortress that towers over the city. From its heights, she marveled at the stunning views of the rooftops and the rolling hills that inspired many of Cervantes’ tales. Strolling through Toledo’s narrow streets, she felt as if she had stepped into Don Quijote’s world, where history and legend blend seamlessly. At the magnificent Toledo Cathedral, Inday was blown away by the intricate Gothic architecture and golden interiors. She paused in awe before the cathedral’s detailed altarpiece and stained glass windows, reflecting on how centuries of artistry had shaped this breathtaking landmark. For lunch, Inday ventured into a quaint little restaurant tucked in the old town. She sampled mazapán, Toledo’s famed almond confection, and a bowl of carcamusas, a rich pork and vegetable stew. Between bites, she noticed a small statue of Don Quijote and Sancho Panza in the corner, a reminder of how the literary hero is woven into the region’s culture. Later, she crossed the Puente de San Martín, an ancient stone bridge spanning the Tagus River. The views were spectacular, with the old town’s spires rising in the distance, and she couldn’t help but imagine Don Quijote galloping across the bridge in search of his next adventure.
