(13 Apr 2014) Pro-Russian demonstrators took over the City Council building in Makiivka on Sunday, as unrest spread to several municipalities in eastern Ukraine. About a thousand people took part in a pro-Russian demonstration in Makiivka, located 16 kilometres (9.6 miles) from the major industrial city of Donetsk. A group of protesters broke into the City Council building and seized it without using weapons. By Sunday evening they had already appointed a new "people's mayor". The actual mayor of Makiivka, Oleksandr Maltsev, attempted to negotiate with the separatists but he had no success. Protesters claimed to be fighting for a better future and against what they described as "mess" and "poverty" in the country. "People live from wage to wage. How can one live like that? People have nothing and have to pay credits. We can't live like this any longer. People have finally risen up," said one. Ethnic Russians in Ukraine's east widely fear that the new pro-Western Ukrainian government will suppress them. Meanwhile, in a televised address on Sunday, Ukraine's President Oleksandr Turchynov said Ukraine is launching a "large-scale anti-terrorist operation" to resist attacks by armed pro-Russian forces, The authorities in Kiev will use the army in order to prevent Russian troops from moving in as they did in Crimea, Turchynov said as he pledged amnesty to anyone laying down arms by Monday morning. Ukrainian special forces exchanged gunfire with a pro-Russia militia in an eastern city on Sunday morning, with at least one security officer killed and five others wounded.
