Myomectomy basically means removal of a myoma. Myoma is the other word used for fibroid. So myomectomy is basically fibroid removal procedure where again it can be done by open technique as well as laparoscopically. Open technique is basically good the technique remains basically the same of the procedure but the entry mode is different. So obviously if you go in for an open procedure and fibroids are known to be vascular. They can cause more of blood loss, need for blood transfusion, post operative stay, post-operative pain management also increases, the recover and going back to work gets delayed with an open technique. But with laparoscopically if a myomectomy is done, it can be much better and easily handled and one wonders how these large fibroids could be removed through simple 5 mm, 10 mm incisions. We have a simple technique called as the morcellator which helps by giving a single 1 to 1.5 cm incisions on one of the lateral ports which we make and through that like a drill machine, like a sausage form. The fibroids are removed completely it has to be done with aa proper technique with an endo bag in place to prevent the spillage within the cavity and that is why it requires a trained personnel to do this kind of a surgery. If you have someone who is good enough and trained how to handle this, you can easily go in for a laparoscopic myomectomy procedure also.
