On Sunday, April 13th, 2025 an article on ADHD was published in the New York Times Magazine about the nature of ADHD and whether we need to rethink our views of this disorder. The article is very similar in the major points it wishes to make to two articles in the Economist I critiqued in an earlier video in November of 2024 on is ADHD a Disorder or a Neurodivergence. The issues the article raises also largely reflect outdated criticisms from more than 30 years ago that were part of a campaign by the Church of Scientology and its Citizens Commission on Human Rights that were refuted even then. Bevause the NY Times article is very long and my criticisms of its contents are numerous, I have divided the critique into four parts for ease of viewing. Part #2 begins with a correction to a minor wording mistake I made concerning the CDC survey of the prevalence of the diagnosis of ADHD and goes on to address many inaccurate claims in The NYTimes article 00:00 Introduction and correction to my statement about the CDC survey methods 02:41 the irony of opening the article noting the organized campaign of Scientology in the 1980s and 90s when the author here is recycling many of those same unfounded claims 04:19 the historically inaccurate portrayal of what was known or not about Ritalin 07:16 PowerPoint presentation detailing the inaccurate claims of the article – the implication that a rise in the prescribing of medications for ADHD is a bad thing. 11:30 What’s wrong with the article’s claims about the premises for using medication 13:55 Why the uncovering of new evidence for the role of the environment in ADHD is not new at all 15:38 The false notion that because symptoms occur in typical children they cannot be used to define or identify disorders 17:02 Oversights and mistakes in the discussion of the DSM criteria for ADHD 20:54 The mistaken assumption that because a disorder is based on a dimensional trait in the population it cannot be a disorder nor a category 26:00 Conclusion - The article as an exercise in journalism by omission NY Times Article is Here: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/13/ma...
