Guardians of the Pacific S1 Ep02: Orea, Kiribati

The Pacific Community has collaborated with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to celebrate the the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022). The celebration is also an opportunity to enhance dialogue between different actors, and not least to strengthen small-scale producers to partner up with one another and make their voices heard so they can influence the decisions and policies that shape their everyday lives – all the way from local community level to international and global fora. This video series aims to : • Raise fishers’ voices at an international level (share their concerns/challenges) • Share fishing knowledge and practices from the region • Highlight local best practices related to fisheries management • Raise awareness on sustainable fisheries management This is the story of Orea from Kiribati, from the Pacific region. His village banned fishing of goatfish every spawning season to regain the health of its marine resources. No one is allowed to fish for goatfish during those periods.
