As high season approaches in the high mountains, Bargrooves takes to the slopes to sample the pleasures of bar culture Après Ski-style for its first instalment of 2012. Anyone who's enjoyed a snowsports holiday well knows the quality of Après Ski or activities off the piste are as important as the quality of snow on it. For the more socially adventurous, bar culture in the Alps of Europe or the Rocky Mountains of North America is as established a part of the overall snowsports experience as hurtling down an icy black run or twisting red, but within the last 10 years the emergence of genuine nightclubs and dance music festivals has brought quality clubbing to higher altitudes. Towns like Verbier in Switzerland with its Farm Club or Casbah, Mayrhofen in Austria, Meribel and Val d'Isere in France and Whistler in Canada have become as synonymous with partying as they are with world-class skiing conditions or snowboarding terrain. It seems every year clubbers become ever more discerning not only with the music but who is playing it to them; as such they attract A-list international DJs who appear regularly behind the decks of some truly epic mountain-top clubbing destinations. Now, Bargrooves provides the quality soundtrack to keep music-loving skiers or 'boarders plugged in to the finer sounds of house music throughout their winter holiday both on piste or afterwards, in the sometimes crazy hours that follow a day on the slopes. Bargrooves' tastemaker, Andy Daniell, himself a veteran of Verbier clubbing, has selected a brand new set of Bargrooves with one bonus mix for the slopes and another for after-dark pursuits. Combing deeper, underground sounds with peaktime moments Andy's selection includes a cocktail of club favourites and the freshest sounds Bargrooves connoisseurs expect from the label. Look Right Through is a hugely loved record from Morgan Geist's new project Storm Queen. This remix is taken from the new remix package and Aeroplane has just killed it. The Magician was the one half of Aeroplane for many years and this was his first solo single. From the awesome Kitsune label in France, I Don't Know What To Do is a sun-soaked superb piano record with an excellent vocal. MK's original remix of Chez Damier's Can You Feel It on Kevin Saunderson's KMS records is a stone cold classic so it takes someone special to do another pass on it. Poker Flat's boss Steve Bug is just that special someone and his awesome new remix is featured. It would have been rude to not include one of the biggest records of 2011 on this compilation. Solomun just twisted Noir's original in the best possible way for what has become an essential club track since the Autumn. Finally, the return of one of dance music's seminal acts, Inner City, was not a disappointment. Nearly fifteen years has elapsed since the last brand new material from Kevin Saunderson, Paris Grey and Ann Saunderson and they have returned with a slice of absolute classic house classic music. We are the Future indeed. Bargrooves Après Ski is released digitally on 13 February 2012.
