Hey all! I'm excited to bring you this birds eye view of how I animate from sketchbook doodle to finished product using two free programs, Inkscape and Synfig. I used more of the time lapse approach, but if you have questions about specific techniques I use, please throw a question in the comments! I might answer it or it might even inspire a subsequent tutorial! Regarding the content: If I finish the music video this is a part of, I will eventually share the link here This work is for a song about saving coral reefs! Do your part by lowering your carbon footprint, limiting your fish consumption, and support policies that protect our oceans! Timestamps: 0:29 = Inkscape bezier trace lines over sketch. I explain why I don't use the pencil as much. 2:25 = I start coloring stuff in! And then transition into my technique for adding shadows. 5:49 = "Save as" inkscape project as a .sif (synfig file) and open in synfig! 6:02 = How I initially line up the objects and groups and stuff in synfig, and get things more set up before actually animating 6:36 = I begin actually animating the coral structure by manipulating large swaths of vertices. I mention a glitch about the need to "merge tangents". 9:14 = I show how to make "sets" (different than groups!) to enhance work flow when parts of an object are behind AND in front of something else. 12:15 = I realize the beauty of adding rounded ends to line art. Then I animate a mushroom growing with a bunch of waypoints and details 19:10 = I decide to make a flashing multicolor background, emphasizing the use of "Constant" waypoints. Enjoy!
