On 7 December 1984, ITN reported on the struggle that Barbie faced as she tried to take on Sindy, her UK rival for the top spot in children's hearts and toy shop shelves. Sindy was still edging ahead of Barbie in terms of sales, experts putting it down to a preference for Sindy's "girl next door" look over Barbie's more glamourous image. The following years, however, would see Barbie's popularity grow worldwide, while Sindy's efforts to keep up through a series of redesigns and relaunches would lead to lawsuits and, ultimately, Sindy becoming delisted from major retailers.
