Date filmed: Thursday the 7th of November 2024 Video filmed at 13:14 Route: Castle Donington Line Best timing point: Castle Donington (XDD) on Real Time Trains Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Filming location: Lock Lane, Sawley (NG10 2FY) A level crossing found in Sawley and located on the Castle Donington Line, a mostly freight-only line that connects the Midland Main Line at Sheet Stores Junction with the Cross Country Route at Stenson Junction and bypasses Derby. For a typically freight-only crossing, this one sees comparatively quite a lot of action throughout the day and night. This level crossing is a reasonably early LED install (dating back to circa. 2009-2010 I'd guess), and while on the whole it's not a particularly remarkable crossing, the wigwags here all have full sets of long shades which too are slightly different to normal as they're the same shades the old incandescent type lights used, and this makes them look rather interesting when viewed from the sides. The road beyond the crossing only really leads to the Trent Lock area, and it's on the edge of Sawley itself. A Class 66 can be seen hauling just three wagons towards Toton in this video. I'd timed it very well getting here as I didn't have long before the crossing was activated, and in the case here, the train was short enough to be let through the crossing and wait for a path at Sheet Stores Junction. Longer trains may wait before the crossing before being let through when they can join the main line, and as I had no idea on the length this train was going to be, I call it lucky that I was ready for the crossing to activate!
