WARNING!!! PLACING YOUR FINGER INSIDE THE HOLE OF THE AIRBOX CAN RESULT WITH THE ENGINE BACKFIRING / MISFIRING. IT CAN CAUSE SEVERE INJURY. I DO NOT RECOMMED THAT THIS BE PERFORMED. I DISCOURAGE IT. THE SERVICE CALL WAS DUE TO THE RED LED BEING LIT WHICH WILL PREVENT THE GENERATOR FROM EVEN TRYING TO START. PROVIDE FULL SERVICE AS THE LAST DATE OF SERVICE IS AN UNKNOWN. I ACKNOWLEDGED THE UNDERVOLTAGE ALARM AND TRIED A MANUAL START WHICH FAILED. (THE GENERATOR TRIES MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS BEFORE LISTING AN OVERCRANK ALARM.) THERE WAS NO OVERCRANK ALARM. I OPENED THE AIR BOX AND PERFORMED THE SINGLE FINGER CHOKE WHICH INCREASES THE VACUUM IN ORDER TO PULL THE GAS THROUGH THE BELLOWS IN THE ONBOARD GAS REGULATOR. THE GENERATOR STARTED. THIS CAN INDICATE A BAD STEPPER MOTOR OR JUST A BELLOWS THAT NEEDS TO BE FREED UP. WITH THE GENERATOR NOW RUNNING I CHECKED THE VOLTAGE OUTPUT OF THE GENERATOR WHICH WAS FINE. THE NEXUS CONTROLLER DOESN'T PROVIDE ANY ERROR CODES SO YOU HAVE TO LOOK FOR THE CAUSE. WITH NO "OVERCRANK" ALARM i FIGURED THAT THE GENERATOR KIND OF STARTED AND RAN ROUGH BEFORE FAULTING OUT ON "UNDERVOLTAGE". I ONLY WANTED TO SEE IF I SHOULD CONTINUE WITH THE OIL CHANGE AND FULL SERVICE. (A COMBINATION OF EXPENSIVE REPAIRS MAY MAKE A GENERATOR REPLACEMENT MORE AFFORDABLE THAN REPAIRING AN OLDER GENERATOR THAT MAY NOT EVEN HAVE PARTS SUPPORT ANY MORE.) THIS GENERATOR WAS WORTH COMPLETING THE SERVICE CALL. THE WATER IN THE AIR BOX? AS YOU CAN SEE, THE AIR IS DRAWN IN FROM OUTIDE THE UNIT ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE. VERY COLD AIR DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. THE HOSE ATTACHED TO THAT HOLE, WHERE THE WATER FORMED, IS CONNECTED TO THE TOP OF THE ENGINE. WHEN WARM AIR FROM THE ENGINE COMES UP AND MIXES WITH THE COLD AIR FROM THE INTAKE - CONDENSATION CAN FOR AND COLLECT. SOMETIMES IT CAUSES PROBLEMS BY ITSELF. I PERFORMED THE SERVICE SCHEDULE B SERVICE WITHOUT THE VALVE CLEARANCE. (I DON'T REMOVE THE VALVE COVERS UNLESS I SUSPECT A VALVE CLEARANCE PROBLEM.) THE BATTERY CARRIED NO DATE SO I WILL RETURN WITH A NEW BATTERY AND PULL THE EXISTING. LOAD TEST THE BATTERY BUT BE PREPARED TO REPLACE IT DUE TO THE ALARM LOG LISTING PROBLEMS THAT GO BACK MONTHS. THE NEW BATTERY WILL HAVE A DATE WHICH EITHER COMES ON THE BATTERY OR I PAINT PEN ON IT OR BOTH. (I LIKE TO SEE THE DATE WITHOUT HAVING TO PULL THE BATTERY OUT TO LOOK FOR IT. I WILL GENERATE A SERVICE REPORT DETAILING ALL OF THE 411 ON THE GENERATOR, SERVICE DATE, SERVICE PERFORMED, MAINTENANCE KIT REQUIRED, THE DATE THE BATTERY WAS INSTALLED AND A LIST OF THE PERTINENT ALARM HISTORY LOGS ALONG WITH THE RUN HISTORY ENTRIES. KEEP A RECORD ON FILE AND PRINT A COPY FOR THE CLIENT. THE OWNER SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE HOW AND WHY MY DECISIONS WERE MADE IN PERFORMING THE SERVICE I DID. AT TIMES I'LL SEND THE VIDEO TO THE OWNER BUT AT MY AGE AND HEALTH IT SOMETIMES REQUIRES AN INTERPRETEUR.
