Kaka Sain assembles and repairs Tablas, the most-used percussion in South Asia. He himself played Tabla for thirty years and then set up a small shop in Bahar colone, Lahore, Pakistan. With his two sons as his assistants, he passes on the traditions of playing as well as making and tuning to his next generation. Here he explains the different parts and the process which bring together one of the world's most fascinating percussion sound. The legend has it that Tabla was created by Amir Khusrao, the thirteenth century Indian Sufi poet, musician, scholar, who cut a dholak, a barrel like two sided drum into two sparate parts, but there is no documentary evidence for this claim. The term 'tabla is derived from an Arabic word, tabl, which simply means "drum."
