On December 17, 1944, Brigadier General Bruce C. Clark arrived in St. Vith, Belgium, with just three men and a radio. Behind him, Germany’s largest offensive since Normandy was tearing through American lines. The 106th Infantry Division was collapsing, two regiments surrounded, and command passed to Clark with brutal simplicity: hold St. Vith. He had no troops on hand, no defenses, and no clear intelligence. What he did have was experience. Months earlier, Clark had defeated German general Hasso von Manteuffel using a “mobile defense,” constantly shifting small tank units to confuse and bleed enemy armor. Now, facing the same opponent, Clark prepared to do it again—quietly, decisively, and without recognition. Disclaimer: This content is for educational and historical purposes only.
