In the spring on 2024, Canadian Pacific's "Empress" 2816 embarked upon an 8,000 mile trek from her home base in Calgary, Alberta all the way south to Mexico City and back. This was the "Final Spike Steam Tour," celebrating the first anniversary of the merger of Canadian Pacific and the Kansas City Southern into CPKC, the first single railway to serve Canada, the US, and Mexico. Not wanting to miss this historic event, my friend @timberlynrice and I made the long drive out to Kansas City to see the Empress as she travelled the former KCS for the first time, from KC all the way down to Shreveport, Louisiana; a strange place to see a Canadian Hudson indeed. Along the way, we just happened to run into my old friend Dominique Hogue, who kindly offered to let me use the footage he & his wife Kylinn would shoot on their own chase. This would turn out to be a blessing, as 2816 was frequently hitting 50mph on its run for the border and I would have had some significant gaps in coverage without their help. Despite the difficulties, this proved to be a fun & exciting two days of chasing as we followed the Empress over 500 miles from the Midwest to the Deep South, on rails that hadn't seen steam of any sort in decades. 2816's odyssey to Mexico will certainly be long remembered in the history of North American steam, and I'm glad I got to be there to witness a small part of this epic journey.
