A playthrough of the hidden boss Klassic Jade in the Steam port of Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat 9/MK9. Classic Jade’s only special attack is Kitana’ Fan Throw. This makes sense, but damn does it make her seem a bit limited. Also, her costume here is her one from MK3 as opposed to MK2, which is shame too as the female ninjas do have their MK2 costumes. To compensate for this, Classic Jade has projectile immunity as she did in MK2. Which, of course, is brilliant, as it not only makes her immune to stun projectiles, but also to the projectiles of Goro, Kintaro and Shao Kahn. Which, with a projectile to spam, made her fight against them much much easier, thank goodness. Classic Jade really sucks on the whole though. Out of all the playthroughs I’ve done, this one was one of the greatest slogs, simply because there was nothing to make it interesting. Classic Jade has ONE special move, which can’t even be cancelled into from her combos, and her combos also just suck in general, dealing pretty paltry damage and barely flowing into one another, if at all. Also, her range is really fucked here for some reason; jump kicks which would have landed fine on her other character just don’t work for her, and it made her even more frustrating and tedious to use as a result. I mean, there really is just nothing to her; apart from projectile immunity, which is pretty great admittedly, she is such a hindered character. I like Jade as a character but I’ve never cared for her fighting style regardless, and that dislike is definitely exacerbated with a half-finished character like this one, who was never meant to be playable regardless. I have realised in hindsight though that Jade’s temporary invulnerable special move (the bane of my existence when playing UMK3 I might add) appears to be a lore-based evolution of her projectile immunity here, and I fucking love lore being expanded upon and legitimised into something else so I appreciate what they tried to do with her, if not necessarily how she actually turned out. Which, you may notice, is something of a recurring theme with Mortal Kombat for me. That finishes up the bosses for this game. Seven in total; what a treat! MKX has a ton of bosses too so that’ll be enjoyable, but next up it’s time to look at the hidden characters for this game.
