Authorities said the clashes erupted when police attempted to stop people from entering a ranch by force with the intent of setting it on fire. But a spokesman for the Alliance for Labourers said police had stopped a group of farm labourers who were heading to work. Farmworkers have been calling for better working conditions and increased salaries. Currently the farm labourers earn about 100 pesos a day, or about 6.5 US dollars.
