1 of 15, AWAKENINGS . . . Opening Scenes, Dr Sayer's interview for job

Awakenings is a 1990 movie directed by Penny Marshall, based on the 1973 non-fiction book by Dr. Oliver Sacks. Screen Play was written by Steven Zaillian. It recounts the life histories of those who had been victims of the 1920s encephalitis lethargica epidemic, and is a strong testament to Penny Marshall's directing ability. She died Dec 17, 2018 at age 75, and is also remembered by many as Laverne in the TV sitcom Laverne & Shirley. Leonard Lowe, who was played by Robert de Niro, is one of the main characters in movie, having been the first of 15 patients “awakened” by Dr. Sayer's (Dr. Oliver Sacks') experimenting with a new drug L-Dopa intended for a different disease, Parkinson's. Dr. Oliver Sacks, played by Robin Williams as Dr. Sayer, who as a newly-hired doctor at a Bronx, NYC hospital for chronic patients, was able in the summer of 1969 to "awaken" 15 patients from their decades-long "sleep". These patients had existed in a frozen state, unable to speak, move their bodies, or do anything much for themselves for the past 30-40+ years Movie begins with Opening Credits and Leonard & 2 friends playing in the snow. Leonard goes over to a wood bench to carve his name on it, when he & his friends discover that he can't open his right hand. The following scene shows the boys at school ... and the teacher checking Leonard's work after all the kids have left. She sees scribbling that she doesn't understand. Next scene shows his friends coming up steps to get Leonard to go to school with them. But he's ill and can't go to school. Next scene is of Dr. Sayer pulling up at the hospital in 1969 for a job interview there. Robin Williams died Aug 11, 2014 at age 63 from suicide. In 1973, he attained a full scholarship to Juilliard in NYC, where one of his teachers described him as a Genius (he plays the piano briefly in an early movie scene). In 2009 he had his aortic valve replaced, and suffered depression a few years later after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (ironical as that was, considering the importance of Parkinson's to the movie). It is my speculative guess only (Charles') as to whether or not his role in Awakenings caused Robin Williams' to internalize a fear of Parkinson's that led to his pre-suicide depression. Dr. Oliver Sacks, a British neurologist & author of at least 18 books died Aug 30, 2015 at age 82, (as a result of a discovered melanoma which left him blind in one eye in 2006, and which was found to have metastasized to his liver a few months before his death).
