PONTASSIEVE | A MUSICAL MAP In the "a musical map" project the NovAntiqua artists make you discover attractive sites in Pontassieve, a small town located in the countryside near Florence. --- Elliott Carter (1908-2012) Figment IV (2007) Francesca Piccioni, viola Recorded at Villa di Grignano, Pontassieve --- VILLA DI GRIGNANO The villa of Grignano was built by the Marquises Gondi in the middle of a vast estate that stretched from the Sieve river into the hills upstream of the town of Pontassieve, on the ruins of what was at first an ancient Roman fort and then in medieval times the Castle of Vico. In the eighteenth century the building was extensively remodelled assuming the features that we can admire today. The core of the Grignano estate is composed of the villa, whose façade on the southern side is characterized by the impressive clock. The Villa is the center of the farm, focused on wine and extra virgin olive oil. https://www.grignanowinery.com --- ELLIOTT CARTER Elliott Cook Carter Jr. (1908-2012) was one of the most respected American composers of the second half of the 20th century, he combined elements of European modernism and American "ultra-modernism" into a distinctive style with a personal harmonic and rhythmic language. Similar to the Italian Luciano Berio with his Sequenzas, Elliott Carter modelled an own musical shape for solo instrument, which he named Figments.
