PCT RFoG Multiple Ports Mini Fiber Node - Purpose and Advantages

PCT International Seamlessly Bringing Fiber Closer to the Home (Multichannel video interview during SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2015 in New Orleans, LA) Humberto Valdes, PCT International VP of Product Management, describes how PCT's innovative, new RFoG mini fiber nodes(PCT-BMFN-W4OxxAS and_PCT-BMFN-W8OxxAS) use existing HFC drop to easily and seamlessly bring fiber closer to the home. PCT International worked closely with a major MSO for a specific need new architecture proof of concept using a fiber to the curb approach in Omaha, Nebraska. Our engineering team worked with them analyzing all of the specs and situations. PCT created a new type of RFoG mini fiber node that provides several outputs with multiple ports outside of the house allowing our customers to use the current drop bringing the fiber closer to the home without changing anything. Adding PCT's new RFoG mini fiber node allows better service provision without affecting the customer as much as if you the installation materials inside of the house. As you can see, inside of this pedestal our multiple port mini fiber node is replacing an traditional HFC tap. Basically, in this case, you have 4 ports each feeding a separate house using the regular drop that the house already has. You have the fiber coming in from the plant. In this case, you have the power is made from the plant so we have a special power adapter in the back of the pedestal that takes the regular 90 volts AC and converts it to 15 volts DC 500 mA to feed the unit as it requires. This unit also comes with the possibility to do a PON overlay. So you will have a secondary port right here, that will let you feed a PON unit inside any of the houses so you can combine RFoG with PON in the same fiber and provide better services as needed by the customer. Traditional mini nodes are focused on a fiber to the home approach. So they basically have one output for the RF part, and they go inside the location with a specific level for that matter. Then you always need to add additional materials for the drop, in order to split the signal or to approach different areas. In this example, we put everything inside the box where we have a 4-port mini node and an 8-port mini node complying with everything that SCTE specs for RFoG. And without any additional materials, you can feed each house directly from the RFoG unit from a pedestal outside while keeping the same drop already installed and also provide a better service. The main advantage of the PCT's new RFoG mini node is that in a traditional fiber to the home approach with RFoG fiber to the home environment, MSOs need to put a fiber node in each house. In this case, only one unit is installed for every four or eight (4 or 8) houses, depending on the case. Another big advantage is that you don't need to replace your current coaxial drop with fiber inside the house saving great costs in materials that may have been installed a couple of years ago and are still in good condition. You don't need to change or replace them. So MSOs are saving a lot of money in the deployment of the installation.
