In 1838 the canton of Lucerne bought the building. Initially it was still used as the work yard of the penitentiary, then from 1884 to 1975 as a cantonal penal institution.[1] The new building took place from 1932 to 1934; the building was maintained until 1971. After the prison was closed, the Sedel was mainly used as a file depot for various official offices until 1980. In the course of the protest movements of the 1980s and the ever-shrinking space for the music scene in Lucerne after the fire in the Kriegerhaus and a demonstration scheduled for February 7, 1981 (at which the two Lucerne bands Crazy and MAD performed live), the city reacted Lucerne and negotiated with the canton of Lucerne about using the Sedel as a rehearsal room for musicians in Lucerne. On January 19, 1981, the east wing was ceded to the city of Lucerne. After the interior was renovated, it was handed over to the Lucerne Musicians' Interest Group (ILM) on April 15, 1981. The west wing was also renovated in 1983 and has also been managed by the ILM since then. Since then, the entire building has been used for concerts and music rehearsals. A number of the original cells are rented out as studios.
