Nunc Est Bibendum represents a boozy night out and its consequences. Bars 1-14 depict a frenzy of quick drinking followed by bars 15-27 where the booze has hit the spot and the drinker is flying. Bars 28-44 represent the drinker staggering around, feeling unsteady and starting to feel nauseous. Bar 45 is the dreaded morning after. Feeling hungover and miserable, the drinker retches and tries to remember what happened the night before. Bars 58/9 and 63-67 are reminders. Still the headache won’t go away. There’s only one thing for it: in the silent bar 72 we must picture him forcing down a large hair of the dog, signalling a new resolve to ‘get back on the horse’ so that gradually by bar 90 our drinker has recovered. He’s off again at bar 92 and flies along with renewed energy to the end of the piece.
