Rukshan Jayewardene, a veteran conservationist and activist, is famously known for his exceptional wildlife photographs. Rukshan completed his tertiary education from the University of Maryland and the University of New Brunswick in Anthropology and Archaeology and he has a Master’s in South Asian Archaeology from the University of Cambridge. Rukshan is a Director of the Wilderness and Protected Areas Foundation, and serves in the boards of many organizations. Rukshan lead the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society, the third oldest nature protection society in the world, and the first in Sri Lanka, as the president during 2016 - 2018. Rukshan is considered as Sri Lanka's leopard expert and his knowledge in Sri Lankan wild animals is incomparable. The book, ‘For the Leopard - A Tribute to the Sri Lankan Leopard’, which Rukshan co-authored and contributed photos to, is a showcase of his love, passion, and commitment to the field. Rukshan has been a strong voice against the captive elephant industry and the zoo system In this segment, Rukshan shares his knowledge on history of captive elephant industry in Sri Lanka and emphasizes his views on why captivity of elephants should be ended now.
