Ave Maria! The Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (used to be Our Lady of Victory) every the 7th of October to commemorate Our Lady's help in defeating the Ottoman fleet on Sunday, 7th of October 1571 at Lepanto. During that time, it was thought that the Ottoman fleet in the Mediterranean was invincible. They were able to roam freely without a significant challenge from the Christian fleet. Christendom was also in turmoil due to the Protestant rebellion in various parts of Europe. In August 1571, Cyprus fell to the hands of the Ottoman under the leadership of Ali Pasha. There, the Ottomans massacred the Christian defenders (despite having surrendered) and flayed their commander, Marco Antonio Bragadin, alive after torturing him for several days. In the meantime, Pope Pius V had been working hard to get the Holy League together to defend Christendom for some time. Unfortunately, due to the various problems plaguing Christendom at that time, the progress was slow. However, after hearing about Cyprus, the Christian states decided to set aside their differences and contribute to the formation of a fleet to stop the Ottoman. This fleet was led by the pious Don Juan of Austria (flagship: The Real) and his second in command was Marco Antonio Colonna (ship: The Capitana) from the Papal State. They departed in mid-August 1571 and faced a high sea. On the 7th of October, they arrived at Lepanto. Don Juan ordered Mass to be offered on each ship and the last rite to be given to the crews and soldiers. The oarsmen (mostly criminals) were released from their shackles and urged to fight with the rest of the men. The Ottoman fleet on the opposite was larger in number, however, the discipline of the crew was lacking. They also had a significant number of Christian slaves that rowed their ships (imagine what kind of motivation they'd have to help the Ottoman...). Another challenge for the Holy League was the wind. It was blowing in favour of the Ottoman, making it difficult for the League's fleet to get in the formation. During this time, Pope Pius V was having a meeting to discuss financial matters with his councils. Suddenly, he stood up, went to open a window and said, "Gentlemen, this is no time to discuss money. The fleet is in danger, take up your rosary and pray!" He commanded everyone to pray the rosary. In the meantime, at Lepanto, the wind started to change direction 180 degrees. One of the priests serving in one of the galleys saw Our Lady appear in the sky and smile at the fleet. This changed the course of the battle. The Holy League's fleet managed to get the upper hand. The Real, under Don Juan's command, charged the enemy flagship, the Sultana. Boarding parties were sent and the arquebusiers' fire was exchanged. But it ended up in stalemate until the Capitana under the command of Capt Colona rammed the Sultana as well. The Ottoman started to lose ground and Ali Pasha, their commander, was shot in the head and died on the spot. Witnessing the death of their commander, the remaining crew surrendered. The Ottoman holy banner with the inscription of their prophet was taken down and replaced by the Christian banner. Seeing this, the rest of the Ottoman fleet decided to retreat. The Holy League won the day! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lyrics: Milites Ecclesiae Tags: #powermetal , #catholic, #catholicmetal , #aigenerated , #christianmetal, #melodicmetal, #lepanto , #donjuan , #battleoflepanto, #history, #1571 , #october7, #ourladyofmostholyrosary, #ourladyofvictory, #holyleague.
