Iran appointed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s son as the next supreme leader, installing another hardline figure to run the country in a message of defiance to U.S. demands that will keep the conflict going as Tehran digs in for a long fight. Iran named Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his father as the country’s ruler late on Monday after his father was killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli operation last month. He is considered to be a hardliner and has close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The IRGC has been constantly launching missiles at Israel and neighboring countries for more than a week.
