Who are Vlach Roma?

This group of Roma comes from the region where the Vlach (Wallachian) language was formed (the Vlach language is the former name of the Romanian language). The peculiarity of the Vlach Romani dialect is that it has well-preserved words that were borrowed from the old Romanian language. In the 15th century, Roma already lived on the territory of the principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia. However, due to slavery and horrible treatment, many of them moved to other countries. For example, in the 18th and 19th centuries, many Vlach Gypsies migrated to the United States to escape slavery. Earlier around the 15th-17th centuries, there were some waves of Roma migration from present-day Romania to Ukraine. One of the main occupations of Vlach Roma was processing and manufacturing of metal products for agriculture. The Vlach Roma are a rather conservative group and preserve their traditions well.
