Dizzy Gillespie was the Yang to Charlie Parker’s Yin as musical partners and the co-pillars of bebop in the 1940s. Instantly recognizable by his comically puffed cheeks (medically termed Gillespie Pouches) and accidentally upturned bell, Dizzy's ebullient nature transcended him beyond his luminary role as jazz musician to become a cultural ambassador, similar to Louis Armstrong in that regard. The world might been a better place if Dizzy's 1964 presidential campaign had been victorious, but few jazz musicians have been as impactful and beloved as John Birks Gillespie. ABOUT THIS SERIES The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course. It traces the roots of jazz from Ragtime at the turn of the 20th century to jazz-rock fusion at the end of the 1960s.
