Jazz Tuesdays is a weekly event featuring great jazz musicians from all over the state of Michigan. Each week brings in a different guest artist and a new experience. Ron Brooks has been a major player in, and influence on, the Detroit jazz community for several decades. Ron emerged as a player in the 1960s, with piano greats-to-be Bob James and Stanley Cowell. Ron was also a member of the Contemporary Jazz Quintet (led by pianist Kenn Cox), recording for Blue Note Records in 1968 and 1969. and was a founding member of the 1970's group Mixed Bag, a cooperative group with a fusion touch. That group included the legendary Eddie Russ on keyboards, Larry Nozero on saxes, Jerry Glassel on guitar, and Danny Spencer on drums. In 1985, Ron opened the Bird of Paradise jazz club in downtown Ann Arbor. His trio became the house band at the club and featured a number of great pianists, including Eddie Russ and Rick Roe. Ron founded the Southeastern Michigan Jazz Association (SEMJA) in the spring of 1987. For it's 25th anniversary, SEMJA named an award for him. Tad Weed is a powerhouse pianist who relocated from Los Angeles to the Midwest. Tad’s discography includes over a dozen CD’s, and he has performed with some of the greatest names in jazz including John Patitucci, Mundell Lowe, Carmen McCrae, Charles Lloyd and Woody Herman. He has played around the world, in such exotic places as Brazil and China, as well as Holland, England, France, Germany and Finland. Tad is also in-demand as an educator, and has given clinics with Bill Watrous, Bobby Shew, Jerome Richardson, Don Menza, George Shearing and Bud Shank. The trio is rounded out by Jazz Tuesdays host Jeff Shoup on drums.
