THIS MOVIE IS NUCKIN FUTS!! FIRST TIME WATCHING DICKIE ROBERTS FORMER CHILD STAR *Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star* is absolutely dumb. But it’s our kind of dumb. This is peak early-2000s broad comedy — loud, obvious jokes, sitcom setups, fish-out-of-water chaos — and yet somehow there’s a little heart beating underneath all the silliness. And that’s why it works more than it probably should. *David Spade* plays Dickie as exactly what the title promises: a washed-up former child star stuck emotionally in the decade that made him famous. The movie leans hard into the joke — he’s stunted, insecure, clinging to fame like it’s oxygen — but Spade keeps him just vulnerable enough that you don’t completely turn on him. He’s obnoxious, yes, but he’s also sad in that specific way only former “adorable” people can be when the applause stops. The premise is gloriously ridiculous: Dickie hires a normal suburban family to help him relive childhood so he can prove to casting directors that he’s emotionally functional. That’s it. That’s the pitch. And the movie milks every possible joke out of a grown man trying to fit in with elementary schoolers and PTA moms. What makes it land for us is that it never pretends to be high art. It knows it’s broad. It knows it’s silly. And it embraces that. *Mary McCormack* plays the straight woman beautifully, keeping the movie from floating off into pure cartoon territory. The kids are actually funny. And the “former child star” cameos are a fun little meta layer that gives it some bite. Is it subtle? Not remotely. Is it prestige comedy? Absolutely not. Is it weirdly sweet by the end? Yeah… it kind of is. There’s a sincerity here about arrested development, about chasing validation, about wanting to fix something broken from childhood. It’s wrapped in slapstick and dumb gags, but the core idea is relatable. That’s the magic trick. Dickie Roberts is goofy, uneven, and unapologetically lowbrow — but it’s got heart. And sometimes you just want a movie that makes you laugh without asking you to diagram its themes afterward. Dumb? Yes. Heartfelt? Also yes. Our kind of dumb? 100%.
