Our five best movies of 2018 – the summit of our poll, drawn from the picks of 164 international critics and curators. We asked them to nominate the five new movie releases that made the biggest impression on them in the past 12 months, be they films seen at festivals or released in their own country, television / streaming series, web videos or artists’ moving-image works. (Some films slower to roll out therefore split their votes over multiple years, as did Faces Places, Western, Zama, You Were Never Really Here and more this year. Others are here even before their UK release, notably Burning, The Favourite and Happy as Lazarro.)
