Rereading the Mirror Stage (1): Space, Paranoiac knowledge, Desire

As readers of Lacan, we often assume that we understand the mirror stage, which is after all, his most well known theoretical construct. This itself might be a case of imaginary misrecognition given that there are several concepts within the theory that remain under explored. With reference to commentaries by Dany Nobus and Calum Neill, we highlight several of these less often explored concepts, such as the role of the spatial environment in the image, the notion of paranoiac knowledge, and the links between the Hegelian themes of desire, recognition, self-consciousness and speech.
