Diego Garcia island is not just a tropical paradise, it’s also a military base that’s home to the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. The Air Force and Navy conduct joint military operations out of Diego Garcia, and the ring-shaped island’s interior harbor is filled with billion-dollar Naval vessels and submarines. Diego Garcia has two parallel runways which are used by cargo planes and heavy bombers. the runways were used heavily at the peak of the War in Afghanistan. Diego Garcia island has a tumultuous history, and its future is not set in stone. Locals were forced to leave the island so the military base could be built. The anchorage area in the center of the island is large enough for a massive aircraft carrier, and there are five huge sealift ships strategically anchored around the lagoon. These sealift ships are filled with millions of dollars of supplies at all times. On the west edge of Diego Garcia, you’ll find a small town where service members spend their downtime. Downtown Diego Garcia is filled with numerous amenities and facilities. It’s basically a small American town. There’s a swimming pool, fitness center, spa, chapel, post office, and mess hall.
