I love society garlic - hardy, tasty and masses of violet-coloured flowers. Our native stingless bees like it too. If you like a hit of garlic, this is the plant for you. I grow from seed and division and show you how I do that, as well as how I protect young plants from cane toads. Presently I have Society garlic seeds for sale on my eBay account: https://www.ebay.com.au/usr/mbyseeds I don't ship to Western Australia, Tasmania or overseas. Other sellers may. Society garlic - ordinary or variegated - is commonly used as an edging plant in a variety of different garden types and is often used solely as a decorative plant. There's a spot not far from here where it's been used as a street planting! It's that tough! The flowers are used to top salads - if they were mixed in, you wouldn't see them. They have a good garlic kick to them if eaten on their own but the flavour can be lost a bit in a mixed salad. The leaves can be used as an onion substitute or anywhere that chives can be used. I've read society garlic is a good plant for ponds and will thrive when semi-submerged but I haven't tried it yet - not sure it'd fit in the birdbath.. I might do some experiments at some stage as I'd like to know. It might be a good addition to an aquaponic set-up. An odd thing about it si the irregularity of the seeds. The seeds are black and are all different shapes and sizes. I'm used to much more uniform seeds. And just to head off comments about my hat looking goofy, I'd been working in the rain and it's gone all weird. I'm working on getting it back into shape. I have it under a massive dictionary as I type this. Have a good one!
