Today I did my first chase of Union Pacific's Valla Switcher, LOA36R. The sole job based out of the small Valla Yard, located in Santa Fe Springs, it switches industries on the Brea Chemical Lead, located in Santa Fe Springs close to Valla Yard, and a lone industry on the eastern end of the line in Brea. I chased the job from start to finish today, and this video features the train switching Valla Yard, as well as serving the nearby industries, with the run to Brea featured in a separate video. The train started at Valla Yard, switching loaded cars acquired from the job's interchange with Los Nietos Yard. The yard slops down westward, allowing the train to do many gravity drops. The train is also remote controlled, with the train being controlled from remote control packs via the RCL GP15-1, with a GP60 added for extra power. After the train built its consist for the SFS industries, they ran around the train to pull westward. The train's first stop was Valvoline. This industry is unique in the fact the trackage it is located on is owned by BNSF. Once originally attaching to the close by San Bernardino Sub, it was severed from the mainline and reattached to the Brea Chemical lead on the other side. BNSF still owns and maintains the branch, however the branch and Valvoline are served by Union Pacific. The lone crossing bears BNSF signage that dates back to the days of the Santa Fe. Following Valvoline, the train pulled off the BNSF spur and back onto the Brea Lead, where they headed to their next customer of Airgas. Here tanks of liquified Argon were exhanged in specialized tank cars. The train then dropped a few other tanks on an adjacent spur, before heading out to switch Fibro Tech, which gets chemical tanks of Hydrochloric Acid, and hoppers. This switch job is tight, and the train nearly has to pull over the busy diamonds with the San Bernardino Sub for this move, but luckily there is just enough space to switch without having to go through the hassle with dispatch. Following this industry, they then pull eastward, and go down another spur to switch Northstar Chemical, and pick up an empty Argon tank from Air Products. Following this, they headed back to Valla to drop all these cars off, and prepare for their run to Brea. Thanks for watching! Train ID: UP LAO36R Head End: UP 1083~GP60 UPY 595~GP15-1
