Latest employment numbers released to Three News by Stats NZ continue to paint a grim picture of the New Zealand workforce. In August 2025, the number of filled jobs (the count of paid jobs) sits at just over 2.3 million, a drop of nearly 17,500 for the same time last year. But since August 2023, there are almost 38,000 fewer jobs available for New Zealanders. The number of people who have been made redundant, laid off or affected by a business closing is also rising. So what can we make of all of this?
