Dictating the Future: The Role of Democracy in an Era of International Tumult

For over 75 years we could count on a constant factor in international affairs: that democracies would largely find themselves in alignment vis-à-vis the world’s dictatorships and autocracies. The last years have entirely upended that certainty. We see closer alignments between the United States and autocratic leaders and increasing dissension among NATO allies, not to mention a solidarity among Russia and China stronger than in previous epochs.
