A request from subscriber 'DavidWTrolololol' led me to this one. David knows it as a song performed by Jimmy Crowley from Cork, but I first heard it sung by The Dubliners back in the days when I had hair! Salonika is the name of the second largest city in Greece, Thesaloniki, which was used during the Great War (WWI) as a staging post for troops from Britain and its allies as the troops were sent to other theatres of war such as Gallipoli and the Macedonian Front. As this song did not appear on any of the LPs I had of The Dubliners, however, it had slipped by me until this request.
