This has been Angela's week. I feel like I've highlighted her everyday this week! It's been an amazing week of progress for this kid, so it's been super fun sharing and celebrating her! Angela has officially found her voice and has learned she is capable of saying whatever she wants to say, WHENEVER she wants to say it. This is a skill that really can't be taught. Kids like mine are over time programmed to be powerless. It's not done on purpose but it's a slow process overtime where we take control away from them due to their inability to self advocate and tell us what they want, need and what they are thinking. The process of undoing that programming is not for the faint of heart. It's tough stuff. It means that you give them a voice and you LISTEN when they choose to use it. Easier said than done. It means that when you are tired and they signal they want to talk -- you must get up and honor them. It's different than typical language development where you can just say "wait a sec". Our kids need to be heard right away, at least in the beginning, so they can begin to regain control over their own life and over their own thoughts. It's happen. It's clicked. And now this kid has power. Wow! She feels powerful and it is so amazing to watch her all the sudden take control over her own life and begin to have complete and total autonomous communication. So now that she's got it we can begin to teach her that sometimes she needs to wait. Lol. How did we even get here? Angela is talking too much?! What an amazing "problem" to have. In this clip you can watch Angela initiate communication all on her own. It was a total spontaneous moment. I was eating lunch and used auditory scanning so she could hear me outside. She gets lost/distracted in the end navigation so I model another way she could ask to come inside and also model the end navigation for her! What a kid!
