Great Expectations Chapter 19 - I come of age

When Pip turns twenty-one, he meets with his guardian, Mr. Jaggers, hoping to finally learn the identity of his secret benefactor. While Jaggers still refuses to share the name, he gives Pip a gift of five hundred pounds and explains that he will receive this amount as an annual allowance from now on. Pip decides to use half of this money to secretly help his friend Herbert Pocket get a partnership in a shipping company. This makes Pip very happy because his good fortune is finally helping someone he loves. Later, Pip takes Estella to visit Miss Havisham at Satis House. During the visit, Miss Havisham acts very possessive and wants Estella to continue her mission of breaking men's hearts. However, Pip is surprised to see Estella and Miss Havisham have a major argument. Miss Havisham calls Estella cold and ungrateful, but Estella reminds her that she is only hard and proud because that is how Miss Havisham raised her. Estella explains that she cannot give love or gratitude because she was never taught what those feelings are. As more time goes by, Pip grows jealous because the rude Bentley Drummle is spending time with Estella. Pip tries to warn her, but Estella tells him that while she tricks and traps other men like moths to a candle, she does not do that to him. By the time Pip is twenty-three, he is still waiting for the day his benefactor will be revealed.
