Dr. Bromberg, Chief of Urology, describes minimally invasive robotic kidney surgery with the da Vinci Robot Surgical System at Northern Westchester Hospital... We use the da Vinci Robotic System to treat kidney tumors and kidney cancers. We also use it to treat congenital anomalies of the kidney. We perform many of these surgeries on a regular basis. One of the beauties of robotic surgery is the ability to perform complex surgery for patients through very small incisions in the skin. The smaller the incision, the less the pain, the quicker the recovery, and the sooner most patients can return to work, as well as to normal activities they would like to engage in outside of the hospital. We have one of the most experienced and high-volume programs in the region. We maintain an extremely high level of expertise in this arena of medical care, as it is an extremely important area for patients with kidney cancers. A traditional surgery for kidney problems such as kidney tumors, or anomalies of the kidney such as an obstruction of the kidneys that presents shortly after birth, involve very large incision through the patient's flank. Because these incisions cut through muscle, the recovery time is very prolonged, and there is a considerable amount of pain associated with this surgery. With robotic surgery now we are able to do this surgery through very small incisions in the lower abdomen, and patients often leave the hospital after major kidney surgery within one to two days. We are now able to go inside the kidney using robotic surgery and remove a tumor from within the kidney, without having to remove the entire kidney. Thus we can preserve as much normal kidney function as possible. The robot allows us to do this. It has excellent visualization. It provides us with phenomenal dexterity. Fluorescence imaging gives the surgeon even more precise visibility of the tumor. And we're actually able to turn off parts of the kidney in terms of blood flow, so we can actually go inside the kidney and remove the tumor with very little blood loss. It's truly a phenomenal opportunity here at Northern Westchester Hospital. For patients that have kidney obstructions, we're actually able to go in, using the robotic system, through small openings and reconstruct the kidney. And patients can leave the hospital usually in one or two days. I feel very fortunate to live in the Northern Westchester Hospital catchment area.
